This could be very interesting! Britain's Telegraph has reported that talks between Manchester United and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa are getting very close to finishing a deal. Ochoa himself has confirmed talks: "There have been people scouting me and I have been approached and have had talks." He even made mention of Manchester United: "They {Man U} are a great team and it is possible something will be done."
Ochoa is 22 years of age and currently plays for Club America in Mexico. His name has become increasingly noted as a result of stellar league play and a dazzling performance against Brazil in Copa America. What's the price tag on Ochoa? £7.5 million.
JDJ says: I'll come right out and say it: Ochoa is the best Mexican goalkeeper I've ever seen. He has an enormous amount of natural athleticism and good size, which makes him a great shot-stopper. He just seems to have that knack for reaching tough to get shots. However, he does lack technique in several areas, which is why in the highlights below you won't see him catch anything. He has great range, too, but also has a habit of making some saves look more difficult than they are.
I really think that Sir Alex wants him at Manchester United to see where his potential will take him. If Man U does sign Ochoa, don't read into it too deeply. Yes, Van Der Sar is older and will soon be gone, Ben Foster is still trying to heal his cruciate ligament and Kuszczak hasn't really shown Man U quality, yet, but that doesn't mean that Ochoa is being brought in to be the #1. Ochoa needs to grow and adjust to the English game a bit before he steps in at Old Trafford. Trust me, despite his strengths, he still has a lot to learn about goalkeeping at the top. and nothing can show him that or teach him faster than arriving at Man U. This could be a great move for the future of Mexican goalkeeping as a whole, but he still has a long way to go before he can prove and retain any status as Man U's #1.
